HTC Volantis leak Nexus 9

It's probably just a generic placeholder device, but the above image could potentially be our first look at an upcoming Nexus tablet. We'll admit that it's a major stretch, but the mysterious tablet certainly looks unlike anything else currently on the Android market. It does, however, look a lot like that supposed 9-inch HTC slate that appeared late last month, so this is a brief look at what's to come.

The image was posted on Google's Think With Google site, which is run by the search giant and is designed to track current trends. Perhaps someone unfamiliar with Google's plans used the image by mistake. Or, like we mentioned above, the picture above could be absolutely nothing—a black rectangle.

As for that supposed 9-inch Nexus tablet: it's reportedly being made by HTC, and is expected to include a 4:3 aspect ratio along with a 8.9-inch 2048×1440 screen. Other alleged specs include a Tegra K1 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB/32GB of internal storage, 8-megapixel camera with OIS and an "aluminum zero-gap construction with tapered-sides."

We've been hearing that Google's Nexus program is very much alive, despite rumors to the contrary. If so, this could be our first official look at the HTC Volantis (or whatever it will be called) which, in Google's summery image above, looks pretty unremarkable. Google isn't expected to unveil any big devices for awhile—maybe in October—though it sure looks like the company is already prepared to unleash a new Nexus army.
