I absolutely adore the Nexus 6P despite its aging design, slowing performance and massive size. But, if I had to choose one Nexus device, it would be the Nexus 4. Even to this day, that device holds up in more ways than one.
Released in 2012, the Nexus 4 was lauded for its snappy performance, elegant design, and affordable price. (Funnily enough, it supported Qi wireless charging, something the iPhone is just now supporting.) It launched with Android 4.2, introducing several camera improvements, gesture typing, and a redesigned clock app, among other things.
Other specs inside the Nexus 4 included a Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, 2,100mAh battery, 4.7-inch display, 8-megapixel camera, and 8GB or 16GB of storage. It was a luxury item at the time of its release, but by today’s standards it would be considered on the very low end.
If it were to exist today, I don’t know if anyone would even consider buying the Nexus 4 since it doesn’t feature LTE support. It also didn’t come with a user-removable battery, something the previous Galaxy Nexus did.
Looking back at our review of the Nexus 4, we called the display “incredible” but knocked it for the lack of microSD card support. “I really like the Nexus 4 from a software perspective and, in terms of hardware, I think it’s the nicest Nexus device yet,” Todd Haselton wrote in his review of the device.
That’s why we look back so fondly on the Nexus 4, which for its time was a terrific smartphone.
