A few months ago, James Cameron announced he was returning to the Terminator franchise for the next installment as a producer. That was great news because in his absence, none of the sequels, prequels or reboots introduced took off. But now he’s revealing that one of the most famous characters in the franchise’s history is also returning.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, during a charity event, Cameron revealed Linda Hamilton was returning to reprise her role of Sarah Connor. Hamilton (and Cameron) was not involved in any capacity with the past three Terminator movies and the TV series that revolved around Sarah Connor’s character. Her last appearance as Sarah Connor was 26 years ago in 1991 in the classic Terminator 2: Judgement Day.
When Cameron spoke about Hamilton’s return, he mentioned it was about time an older woman got a role as a kick-ass action hero—or heroine in her case.
“There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys, but there isn’t an example of that for women,” retorted Cameron.
Linda Hamilton was fantastic in the original movies; it’s great news to see her come back to the role that launched her career and introduced one of the best cinematic heroines ever. Plus, maybe we’ll see those impressive biceps she was rocking in Judgment Day.
Now that Hamilton is onboard, joining James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger, pretty much the entire creative force behind the first two Terminators are returning. With Hamilton’s Sarah Connor returning, this pretty much confirms the next Terminator movie will be a direct sequel to Terminator 2. Tim Miller, the director of Deadpool, has signed on to direct with Cameron serving as a producer.
Expanding on some of his ideas for the movie, Cameron related: “We’re starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story. We still fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters, but we’ll have Arnold and Linda’s characters to anchor it.”
There’s still no set release date for the untitled Terminator sequel, but it can’t get here fast enough.
