Square Enix and Eidos Montreal's Thief series is already getting the Hollywood treatment, but a new game could also be in the works as a tie-in. The movie's production company Straight Up Films' mentions the development on its website, calling the first game "one of the greatest games ever created."
Originally released in 1998 by Eidos Interactive (Deus Ex) and distributed by Square Enix (Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy), the Thief series has spanned over fifteen years and four sequels continually retaining loyal audiences and attracting new fans with each iteration. Widely considered to be one of the greatest games ever created, a fifth sequel is currently in development to be released in step with this motion picture adaptation.
However, the series has not fared well in recent years with the 2014 reboot receiving lukewarm marks and sales. Square Enix has yet to confirm a fifth game in the series, and it was seen as unlikely following the reception of the 2014 game. Eidos Montreal also suffered layoffs in the wake of its release.
Thief claims are dubious
The Thief film was confirmed for production a while back, and it signed on writers Adam Mason and Simon Boyes back in March 2016. The film does not yet have any actors or directors, but it has producers in both Adrian Askarieh and Roy Lee. These two, respectively, have previous work with Eidos franchises in both the Hitman movies and a Deus Ex: Human Revolution film that never got off the ground.
If a Thief game is in development, we'd see the reveal at E3, meaning we'd probably get the game next year. If that's the case, the movie better hurry up or it won't be able to be released as a tie-in. We don't want this to become another video game film that never gets made.
