Two of Hollywood’s most promising young actors have joined the New Mutants films, an X-Men spinoff directed by Josh Boone.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams and The Witch’s Anya Taylor-Joy have signed on to the project, about a group of teenaged mutant superheroes-in-training.
The report claims Williams is set to play Wolfsbane, who in the comics possessed the ability to transform into a wolf. Anya-Joy, meanwhile, has been cast as Magik, younger sister of Colossus who has the ability to teleport, among other things.
Here is what THR says New Mutants will be about:
The movie will focus on the angst-driven adventures of a diverse group of teens that include Native American Danielle Moonstar, Scots girl Wolfsbane, Brazilian ladies man Sunspot, a Kentuckian code-name Cannonball, and Russian teen Magik. Also in the mix will be an alien named Warlock.
New Mutants is set to begin filming this summer, with an April 13, 2018 release date already set. Apparently, executives behind the movie are trying hard to ethnically match actors to the characters. A wide search is reportedly being conducted for Moonstar and Sunspot, who are Native American and South American, respectively.
With Williams and Anya-Joy now in the mix, the remainder of the New Mutants team will likely be cast in the coming weeks. In addition to the roster mentioned above, longtime X-Men producer Simon Kinberg previously said some familiar faces will show up in the New Mutants movie, why may include Storm, who was last played by Alexandra Shipp.
