FBI warning 2012

In case consumers needed another reason to dump physical media, get ready for even more annoyances when you fire up that new Blu-ray disc.

It was announced last week that the familiar FBI warning that tells you about the evils of pirating is going to get a second warning badge on it, will be unskippable and will also feature a second badge displayed on it for Homeland Security Investigations.  Even worse?  There will now be a second screen that shows up as well that will try to “educate” you about copyrights that will also last 10 seconds and you won’t be able to skip it.  So … welcome to 20 seconds of your life being stolen from you every time you fire up a legally purchased or rented disc.

Six studios have signed on to this new plan and the new warnings are showing up as we speak.

As studios continue to complain about how the sales of physical media are slowing down, and yet legal digital downloads are not making up for it, someone got the bright idea that annoying consumers was the brightest idea ever?  “Our nation’s film and TV business is critical to our economy,” said ICE Director John Morton. “Its creativity and imagination have made American entertainment one of our greatest exports over the decades, but criminals are increasingly engaging in new forms of digital theft. Law enforcement must continue to expand how it combats criminal activity; public awareness and education are a critical part of that effort.”

We’re not quite sure who is being educated by this as it will more than likely be on a legally obtained disc, but we’re glad they think this will accomplish anything.  Even ignoring illegal downloads that come with none of these nuisances, legally obtained digital downloads and steaming media don’t contain this nonsense.  It’s almost like the studios want to annoy us into not buying discs at this point.
