Final Fantasy Adventure is still one of my favorite games in Square Enix’s long-running series, and the company will finally be announcing a proper follow-up this week at Tokyo Game Show 2015. This is the second time Square Enix has mentioned the mysterious sequel following the teaser announcement shown off in June.

For those who don’t know, Final Fantasy Adventure was originally an early Game Boy spin-off aimed at stealing some thunder from Zelda with its action oriented combat. Many of its ideas and lore were used to create the Seiken Densetsu series, known in North America as Mana. Early fan-favorite sequels like Secret of Mana and Legend of Mana turned it into Square’s “other” RPG series for a while, but it petered out in popularity on the PlayStation 2 once Kingdom Hearts started to fill that role.

It never recovered fully on traditional platforms, but Square Enix has been using the series to push its mobile gaming. Rise of Mana has been a pretty big hit in Japan.

Nothing is known about this new Seiken game just yet. Will it be a mobile game? Will it be a new Mana or a direct sequel to the first game? We’ll have to wait an see on Thursday. I’m hoping for a proper entry in the series with Nintendo 3DS aspirations, but not everything has a happy ending these days.

Stay tuned from Sept. 17 until 20 for our TGS 2015 coverage.
