We’re not expecting an Apple Watch 2 at the Cupertino company’s big event next week, but there may still be some hardware news on the smartwatch front. A new report suggests we could see several fresh versions of the device unveiled, including a more affordable gold option.
The New York Times claims Apple will reveal a few new “metal finishes” for the smartwatch, citing several anonymous insiders. It’s unclear if that means a golden version of the regular Apple Watch, which costs between $549 and $1,099, or a slightly cheaper Apple Watch Edition, currently priced at $10,000 and up. Either way this new Apple Watch option won’t really be “cheap,” though it could be a lot less expensive than the current gold options.
Apple is all but guaranteed to talk about watchOS 2 during the event, which kicks off on September 9 in San Francisco. The presentation is expected to be chock full of news, with recent rumors suggesting we could see two new iPhones, a new Apple TV box, and two new iPads unveiled. There’s also new iOS and OS X software to go over, along with possible updates for Apple Music.
Whether Apple will even have any time left to talk about new watch options is unclear, though The Times notes that CEO Tim Cook could surprise us with another “one more thing” announcement at the end of the presentation.
