Moto X Custom, Volume Buttons

Nearly nine months after the Moto X was officially unveiled, our enthusiasm for the device still hasn't waned. Granted, we recognize that there are some terrific competing flagships currently available. But if you're looking for a cheap device capable of punching above its weight, the Moto X is it. The hardware is still great, and Motorola's software tweaks are still among the best. So, you'll forgive us if we're excited for a little spring sale set to take place on May 1.

Motorola has held some big sales for the Moto X in the past, and that trend isn't stopping now. Beginning May 1 at 12:01 a.m. ET, the Moto X price will be dropped by $50 for the 16GB version, and $75 for the 32GB and Developer Edition models. The 16GB version typically starts at $349, but will be taken down to an more wallet-friendly $299. The other models, meanwhile, will be dropped to $324. These are off-contract price. Anyway you want to slice it, that's a pretty good deal for a phone you can customize.

We're expecting a new Moto X to come out this summer, so bear that in mind if you are thinking of getting a new device soon. Just this last week benchmarks for a possible Motorola device mysteriously popped up, suggesting the company's flagship might get a 5.2-inch 1080p display, 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, Android 4.4.3 and a 12-megapixel camera. That's a nice upgrade to the Moto X that's getting a price cut next week. Our inclination is to wait, but you'll still get a great phone regardless.
