It looks like Motorola isn’t quite ready to give up on the disappearing QWERTY market. The company has already unleashed a handful of terrific new devices—the Moto X being one of them—and it appears Motorola is ready to add the Droid 5 to the mix. We haven’t seen very many QWERTY sliders over the past year or so, so this will come as quite the surprise. And hey, why not? It’s good to change things up every once and awhile, even if demand is relatively low.
Leaked over on Chinese website Weibo, the device supposedly comes with NFC, wireless charging and a display in the 4.5-inch range. Not much else is known about the handset, such as when it might launch, or even if it will at all. But Motorola CEO earlier this year said the company planned on unleashing plenty of devices before October, so there’s still plenty of time to introduce this supposed Droid 5.
With the market predominantly dominated by touch-only devices, it’s unlikely there’s much room for a QWERTY slider, especially with other more exciting flagships coming during the fall period. But with very few QWERTY sliders on the market, maybe Motorola will be able to capture a very niche, very small segment of smartphone consumers.
