Peter Jackson is back with another film, but the question is if it will launch another series.
Mortal Engines is Peter Jackson’s latest film and is based off of the first book in a four book series of the same name. Universal summarizes the new film as:
Thousands of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, humankind has adapted and a new way of living has evolved. Gigantic moving cities now roam the Earth, ruthlessly preying upon smaller traction towns. Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan)—who hails from a Lower Tier of the great traction city of London—finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar). Two opposites, whose paths should never have crossed, forge an unlikely alliance that is destined to change the course of the future.
While Peter Jackson’s name is all over this film and marketing materials, he served as a producer and screenwriter, but the directing duties fell to Christian Rivers Who worked with Jackson on the Hobbit films.
Although there are four books in the series, there has been no word as of yet as to if this will turn into a series. Seeing as almost everything in film is now viewed as the launch of a franchise, we wouldn’t be too surprised to hear about a second film before this one even hits the screens.
Don’t buy your tickets quite yet, Mortal Engines won’t hit theaters until Dec. 14, 2018.
