Mojang and 4J Studios, if you didn't already know, have been working on porting the indie sensation known as Minecraft to the Xbox 360 since before last year's E3 convention. 4J Studios has been in charge of bringing the port to the console, while Mojang has stood in a supervisory role.
Minecraft will be available on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace on May 9 and cost 1600 Microsoft Points.
Minecraft on the Xbox 360 will not be concurrent with the Minecraft we've all been playing on the PC, Mac and Linux platforms. Instead, the Xbox 360 version of the game will launch with a similar level of content as the 1.6.6 beta version of the original Minecraft. It will, however, be frequently updated.
The Xbox 360 version of the game will also include a tutorial, an in-game wiki, achievements, four player splitscreen and friendly co-op for up to 20 players per map. For those that want to deck their avatars out in Minecraft goodness in anticipation of this new launch date, know that the clothes, pets and props are up for sale now on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace.
If you already own Minecraft on your computer, do you intend to pick it up again on the Xbox 360? If so, what's drawing you to this port in addition to the copy you already have? If not, is it a simple matter of not wanting to snag the same game twice?
Currently, the Xbox 360 is the only console that's set to host an edition of Minecraft.
As more comes for the game, including its eventual updates, we'll have it.
