Microsoft will support its latest Windows Phone 8 operating system into 2014, the company recently confirmed on its lifecycle page. Mainstream support will end in July of 2014, more than a year from now, while mainstream support for the less-powerful Windows Phone 7.8 will be offered through July 9, 2014.

"Microsoft will make updates available for the Operating System on your phone, including security updates, for a period of 18 months after the lifecycle start date," the company explained. "Distribution of the updates may be controlled by the mobile operator or the phone manufacturer from which you purchased your phone. Update availability will also vary by country, region, and hardware capabilities."

We expect Microsoft will have Windows Phone 9 (codenamed Blue at this point, it seems) on the market well before it pulls support for Windows Phone 8.
