In addition to the company's Touch and Type covers for Surface, Microsoft is entertaining the idea of much more interesting accessories. During a Surface AMA on Reddit Wednesday, the company hinted that a keyboard with built-in battery might be on the way, or possibly some form of external battery.

The company ruled out any sort of traditional docking station, though a third-party OEM could fill that gap.

"At launch we talked about the "accessory spine" and hinted at future peripherals that can click in and do more," a Microsoft spokesperson said. Elaborating further, the spokesperson said Surface accessory spines can be designed in such a way to transfer higher currents between device and peripheral.

With the Surface Pro already facing battery concerns, it's no surprise the company is looking into ways to improve the experience. Having a portable Windows 8 desktop experience in such a small package is hugely exciting, but having that at the expense of abysmal battery is not. We'll see what Microsoft concocts in its Redmond labs.
