Microsoft Surface RT Box LogoMicrosoft on Tuesday announced that it's expanding retail distribution of is Surface RT tablet. In the trenches of the holiday season, and the new year only a few weeks away, it's about time. The company must have realized that such limited availability wasn't so good for overall Surface sales.

Beginning mid-December, Microsoft's exciting new tablet will be available at more, as-of-yet unannounced retail outlets. We'd expect Best Buy to be a big mark, along with brick-and-mortar stores such as Walmart and Target. Additionally, some of those temporary pop-up kiosks will become more permanent outlets, the company said.

"Our plan has been to expand the retail presence for Surface after the first year," said Steve Schueler, corporate vice president, Microsoft Retail Sales and Marketing. "Based on interest from retailers, we are giving them the option to carry Surface with Windows RT even earlier."

It's unclear how successful or unsuccessful Microsoft's jump into the tablet game has been thus far. The company hasn't shared any hard figures, and that might be because sales have allegedly been well below expectations. Whether this move is a response to those reports remains to be seen.
