As reported by Kotaku, citing three sources close to the matter, Microsoft is making a big move on securing some much-needed exclusivity. The company is reportedly about to seal up a deal to buy fan-favorite RPG studio Obsidian Entertainment.
When reached for comment, Microsoft gave a standard “We do not comment on rumors or speculation,” but leave it up to Obsidian to give a cheeky response to the rumor.
Unfortunately, we don’t comment on rumors or speculation other than to say that the Rumors album by Fleetwood Mac still holds up.
Nothing but love, Obsidian.
The studio has long had a reputation of being master storytellers, made up of former Black Isle Studios developers including Feargus Urquhart and Chris Avellone. As seen in some of their most beloved games Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, South Park: The Stick of Truth, and Fallout: New Vegas, their stories are backed up by game-breaking bugs that both ruin your experience… or enhance them.
Recently, the studio became something of an indie sensation, crowd-funding the universally praised Pillars of Eternity before moving onto two more games, Tyranny and Pillars of Eternity 2, due later this year.
And yes… I still have a soft spot for its critical flop Alpha Protocol. What a delightfully busted game!
Microsoft desperately needs some exclusive content to fend off the dominance of Sony, right now. Obsidian is a talented, wonderful studio, so if this deal goes forward, maybe it will aid in getting the Xbox One back into competition.
If not, well… it’s not like these guys don’t know how to build an all-time great RPG studio from the ground up.
