The decade long console cycle has worked well for Sony so far, so Microsoft believes it too has what it takes to support a console for ten years and beyond.

Microsoft Corporate VP Phil Harrison stated in a European Expo keynote address that the Xbox One will be embarking on a"more than 10-year journey."

"For us, it's not just about the launch date. It is about the start of the journey where the console will be improved and will be adapted and changed."

Microsoft has yet to support a console for more than ten years. The Xbox kicked the bucket once Madden NFL 09 was released six years after the console's launch. Its rival, the PlayStation 2, just saw the release of FIFA 2014 three days ago a good thirteen years after its launch.

The Xbox 360 will turn eight years old this holiday season and shows no sign of slowing down in the face of its successor looming closer everyday. Microsoft has claimed three years of support will still be given to it, putting it at 11 years on the market. Time will tell.
