Microsoft is working on its own pair of augmented reality goggles that could compete with Google Glass, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday. Microsoft is already approaching parts suppliers in Asia, the paper said, and is working to acquire cameras that could be used on the first models. Google Glass has a camera that can be controlled via voice commands or by tapping a button on the side of the unit.

Right now Google Glass is available for a select group of testers and is priced at a prohibitively expensive $1,500 price point. Microsoft could do well to figure out a way to get the costs down, and make an attractive version, though it will need to show users how its product will perform better than Google’s, which is already quite advanced and has a load of developers already creating applications.

The Redmond-based company has lofty goals, according to The Wall Street Journal. One person told the news outlet that the company is “determined to take the lead in hardware manufacturing to make sure the company won’t miss out on the opportunities in the wearable gadget market.” Considering Google is well on its way, Microsoft will need to move quickly.
