If 2013’s Tomb Raider is any indication, Rise of the Tomb Raider should be an excellent, high quality game. Even so, it’s hard not to look at Nov. 10 as a bit of a David and Goliath situation. Rise of the Tomb Raider releases on that day alongside the hotly anticipated Fallout 4.

Microsoft’s Xbox Marketing head, Aaron Greenberg, isn’t so worried, but admits they’re releasing at a tough time of year.

“They’re not direct competitors per se,” he said, speaking with Kinda Funny Games, suggesting that the two should have plenty of separate consumers.

“The challenge is that you have to look at the production schedule,” he added. The game shouldn’t come out too early. “The challenge with Tomb Raider is if you go a week later, you’re against Star Wars: Battlefront, if you go a week earlier you’re against Call of Duty: Black Ops III. You go two weeks earlier and you’re against Halo 5.”

If you release too late, of course, you’re coming in after Black Friday and everyone’s spent all their money for the season.

Going up against the other big single player game instead of one of the multiplayer games seems to me to be a more direct competitor than their other choices, but Call of Duty and Battlefront are forces to be reckoned with all the same. November is, as with past years, an incredibly busy month packed with games, so no matter when Rise of the Tomb Raider released, it was going to be a tough hill to climb.

Hopefully Lara Croft is up to the task once again, though, when Rise of the Tomb Raider hits on Nov. 10 for Xbox One and Xbox 360.
