Metal Gear Solid 2 art

Just like Star Wars, no single entertainment brand can excel if all creative decisions are left up to a single man. Now that we know Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has moved on from Konami and has started his own studio, we don’t need his first solo project becoming a prequel trilogy disaster of epic proportions. He’s going to have to surround himself with talented people, and who else better than those who he’s already comfortable with?

In an interview with IGN, Hideo Kojima has confirmed that he will be bringing former Metal Gear Solid Producer Kenichiro Imaizumi and artist Yoji Shinkawa along with him on his new project. Imaizumi has been around the franchise since Metal Gear Solid 4, giving him some much needed experience of knowing how to reel in Kojima’s vast imagination and make it all feasible.

As for Shinkawa, he’s been around since the very first Metal Gear Solid game, and his artwork is synonymous with the franchise. Surely you recognize his works.

Kojima also outlined his studio’s new mission: “The focus is on digital content, so we could consider movies, animations, anything. But first I think people expect games from me. That’s where I want to put my focus.”

Wow, whatever happened to Kojima openly defying expectations put on him? That was sort of his shtick at the turn of the millennium. Could he have matured over the last 15 years?

“Once we have an established IP in games, something solid that satisfies people, then we can consider movies and videos. We’ll have more agility. We’ll be able to do things that are more edgy, preserving the quality we’ve had so far, while at the same time finding new challenges and exploring new areas.”

Whatever it is, I can’t wait. It looks like Kojima will not have to turn to Kickstarter like Castlevania Producer Koji Igarashi did. All for the best, I suppose.
