When this game's debut trailer ran during E3 of 2010, the project was titled Metal Gear Solid: Rising. Now, with the trailer and assets (which you can see in the gallery at the base of this post) that came from the Spike Video Game Awards show, the game has become Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.
Which, as Metal Gear fans will probably attest to, makes sense. Solid Snake completed his journey, as is to be believed, with Metal Gear Solid 4. With Snake gone, "Solid" goes too.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a collaborative effort in the arena of development. Of course, series helm Kojima Productions will be a piece of the development process; but, in addition, Platinum Games Inc. (MadWorld, Bayonetta and Vanquish) will be joining the production effort.
If you've played any of Platinum Games' titles, then you know how greatly they vary when compared to the Metal Gear franchise. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance's official website makes note of that point and delivers a brief message concerning what we're to expect from the collaboration:
…after Platinum Games came on board, the story was changed to take place several years after METAL GEAR SOLID 4 to give them more of an opportunity to show off what they can bring to the series. Cyborgs are spreading at a rapid pace in the game's world, resulting in earth-shattering superhuman action at every turn!
The original aim for a combination of stealth and action has also been enhanced, for a more aggressive new focus on pure, exhilarating action.
I will say, as a fan of both development studios and their work, this collaboration has me both nervous and excited. These two teams are Japanese development powerhouses; however, their styles are different from one another. Playing a fast-paced, aggressive Metal Gear game sounds weird in premise alone. I understand that Raiden isn't Snake, but the idea of not sneaking around and being stealthy constantly almost seems bizarre to me.
As more news concerning Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance comes out, we'll be all over it. The game is currently planned for release some time in 2012 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms.
The Spike Video Game Awards ran on Saturday night. During the show, several brand new trailers for projects both freshly revealed and already known were made public. As part of our early week coverage, we'll be posting those trailers along with additional game details from the publishers and developers behind each project.
If you've not seen the media before, enjoy it. If you already saw it on Saturday night, get pumped to enjoy it again. However, like we said, we will be working to bring details beyond what was revealed during the show.
