Konami held a press conference for their upcoming hack ‘n slash addition to the popular Metal Gear series. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is just out of reach and ready to burn holes in a few peoples’ pockets. I’ve warmed up considerably towards it since its first reveal, and the latest videos are a clear indication of why.
The first video, seen above, does not come across as particularly exciting at first, showing the incredibly linear nature of the levels Raiden is going to be running through. However, it eventually picks up with three separate mechanics. First, Raiden takes down some awkwardly built robots with the true star of this video game, the exciting combat. Then he plays a little dress up with a poncho and cowboy hat before finally sneaking up on another robot using Snake’s classic “cardboard box” technique.
It’s great to see that Hideo Kojima’s fabulous sense of humor in the face of danger hasn’t dwindled over the years.
The second video shows our unlikely hero single-handedly taking down a Metal Gear to whatever this noise Platinum Games believes is rock music. Ugh.
At any rate, remember when Metal Gears were something to be feared? They could transport anywhere, silently laugh nuclear missiles from a mobile platform, and pretty much fight an entire war on their own. Every encounter Snake had with one of these mechanical beasts ended up being a close match, but when pitted against Raiden in a fight to the death, it always seems so unfair. He could drop them like flies at the end of Metal Gear Solid 2, and here he is, doing his best to imitate Dante while felling this monstrosity. It hardly seems fair for the Metal Gears anymore.
He even brought along Dante’s iPod to listen to while doing it.
I won’t pretend that the game doesn’t look totally sweet. Subtlety is a concept which has long alluded the Metal Gear series, and this is merely the manifestation of Hideo Kojima not giving a second thought about self regulation. Exciting videos to be sure.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will be released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on February 19th. Check out our demo impressions here
