Mega Man Zero

Are you one of those cranky older gamers, like me, who is a little fed up with the lack of new Mega Man games? Did Super Smash Bros. not satisfy your craving of the Blue Bomber enough? Well, have you played the Mega Man Zero games yet?

If you haven't, then you better get on that! These Game Boy Advance games are the true successors to the classic Mega Man X games, sporting many of the same mechanics and design qualities of the Super Nintendo and PlayStation masterpieces. The only major difference is that they star a chibi version of X's partner, Zero.

That and they are gut-bustingly hard! Developer Inti Creates, now famous for Azure Striker Gunvolt and Mighty No. 9, was absolutely relentless when designing this game. Level designs are a pain, boss battles are the most difficult in the franchise, you are graded based on your performance with each level, and worst of all, this rank actually affects the outcome of the game! Certain power-ups might never be unlocked with a lower ranking, and at the same time, using some of these power-ups punishes you by permanently lowering your performance ranking anyway!

It's an absolute nightmare! You really need to pick and choose how to improve your character because doing so too much overall makes the game too easy, and Inti Creates does not want that.

Mega Man Zero 2 is a much better designed game with a lot of the punishment removed, but Mega Man Zero is still a decent choice for those who want a challenge. It is available now on the Wii U Virtual Console, so be sure to check it out if you have not yet done so.
