Huawei brought a new laptop to MWC 2018, a trade show normally focused on phones and tablets. And maybe there’s a reason for that. The MateBook X Pro features something we’ve been seeing on an increasing number of mobile devices for the last two years. Now it’s finally making its way to laptops, most notably with this one.
The MateBook X Pro ships with crazy-thin bezels to give an all-screen experience similar to what we’ve seen on flagships from the mobile industry.
There’s no denying that this is a high-end computer. Both the hardware and the software are on a premium level. Starting with the display, Huawei implemented a 13.9-inch (3000×2000) display but without thick bezels. The MateBook X Pro manages to have a roomy screen while not taking up a lot of space. It also has the same 3:2 aspect ratio found on Microsoft’s Surface devices, which is preferred by some professionals.
Since the bezels are so slim, Huawei actually integrated the webcam into the keyboard.
Running the show for the MateBook X Pro is, of course, Intel’s Core i5 or i7 processors. And they are from the eighth generation to ensure maximum power and efficiency. Even more impressive is the inclusion of NVIDIA’s GeForce MX150 GPU. It’s a discrete graphics chip that should make light gaming pleasant.
If there’s any issue you might take up with Huawei’s stunning laptop, it’s the port selection. There are two USB-C ports and one USB-A port. So be prepared for dongles and adapters if you aren’t already.
Huawei included a power button with a built-in fingerprint scanner as well. And battery life is estimated to be up to 14 hours on a single charge. That could be optimistic, though. The MateBook X Pro is so thin, light, and powerful that pushing the laptop to its limits could greatly reduce battery life. Still, the 65W charger should supply juice pretty fast.
Along with Windows 10, the laptop has a handful of pre-installed services. Microsoft Translator is one of them, but Huawei’s own Share is more impressive. It syncs phones, tablets, and computers to have files accessible anywhere.
The MateBook X Pro should be available this spring, and its price is set around $1,800. When it does become available, you’ll get to choose between Mystic Silver and Space Gray for colors. Stay tuned for specific pricing and a release date for your market.
