The fan consensus on The Last Jedi is, shall we say, divided. While some laud it for its daring shifts away from traditional Star Wars canon, others feel it pulls too far away in too many ways to be considered a true Star Wars film. One early critic happens to be one of the movie’s stars, Luke Skywalker himself – Mark Hamill. With the pitched battle currently setting the internet alight, Hamill is rethinking his comments.
“I regret voicing my doubts [and] insecurities in public,” Hamill said on Twitter. “Creative differences are a common element of any project but usually remain private. All I wanted was to make a good movie. I got more than that – [director Rian Johnson] made an all-time great one!”

Hamill had previously said in interviews that he wasn’t happy with Johnson’s direction for Star Wars’ leading man.
“I pretty much fundamentally disagree with every choice you’ve made for this character,” Hamill had said to Rian Johnson, according to an interview with the actor back in May.
Hamill’s dissatisfaction has been picked up as one of the primary weapons in a fight to pry The Last Jedi from its place in the Star Wars history. Long-time fans of the series have started petitions to remove it from the series canon, and even as ammo to suggest that review-aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes’ “freshness” system is inherently flawed (something that gets bandied about anytime hardcore fans are unhappy with the direction of a beloved license.
For his part, Johnson has said that his goal “is never to divide or make people upset,” but that he does “think the conversations that are happening were going to happen at some point if Star Wars is going to grow, move forward, and stay vital.”
Despite the criticism, The Last Jedi is still tearing it up at the box office, pulling in over $1.6 billion at the box office as of Christmas.
