906429 - The Amazing Spider-Man 2

The next Spider-man will be younger—much younger—than Sony's most recent take on the web slinger. Variety reports Sony Pictures is already looking for an actor to don the red and blue spandex, with plans to explore our hero's awkward high school years. Leading candidates to play the role include Teen Wolf's Dylan O'Brien, Fury's Logan Lerman. For what it's worth, both baby-faced actors are 23.

Variety says Sony wants to explore a storyline where Spider-Man struggles to balance his life as a teenager and superhero. We've actually been to Midtown High School before when Tobey Maguire played the role, but we never really got to see what his relationship was like with other students (aside from a single fight). The new standalone film, scheduled for a 2017 release, will apparently focus less on Spider-Man's romantic interests, and more on what it's like to be a teen.

It might not even be Peter Parker the movie focuses on, Variety says. Plenty of people have been calling on Marvel Studios to introduce audience to Miles Morales, whose powers are similar to that of the original Spider-Man. He is the second Spider-Man in the Ultimate Marvel continuity.

Although Peter Parker is beloved by hardcore Spidey fans, introducing a new Spider-Man would allow Marvel and Sony to start fresh without feeling like they're re-hashing Parker's origin story yet again. Early rumors suggest we're not going to start from the beginning, which means introducing Morales might make the most sense.

In any case, the new Spider-Man will be your typical high school kid. Just, you know, with some really cool special abilities. In addition to a standalone film, reports suggest we'll see the web slinger first show up in Captain America: Civil War, though it's unclear how big or small his role will be.
