Mad Max director George Miller is working on the sequel to Mad Max: Fury Road. In a new interview with The Independent, Miller talked about what’s going on and a bit about what we can expect.
While he says he’d like to do something else first before he dives into the next film, Miller says he has screenplays for two Mad Max films written. The title of the first, assuming Miller gets to make it, will be Mad Max: The Wasteland. Miller himself doesn’t even sound sure. “Somewhere, if the planets align,” he said, “there will be two other films.”
Fury Road saw countless delays before it was finally up and running, and that gave Miller and co-writer Nico Lathouris a bunch of time to dig into the back story of the characters and world.
“A movie like Fury Road is told in a very wild, helter-skelter way, so the underlying logic of everything in the film had to be pretty rigorous, otherwise the film would’ve been chaotic,” Miller explained. “So one of the advantages of the many delays was that we were able to spend time getting into these backstories.”
The Doof Warrior will return
Miller even provided an example – that amazing, bizarre character suspended from a wall of amplifiers, The Doof Warrior, wailing on a gas-powered electric guitar.
“I know who is mother was, I know how it was that a man who is mute and blind survived the apocalypse. I know his story very well,” Miller said. “If we get to make another movie, the Doof Warrior will be there!”
Mad Max: Fury Road was a big surprise when it hit in 2015. Director George Miller had stepped away from the apocalypse for years to direct children’s features like Babe: A Pig in the City and Happy Feet. Then here comes Fury Road, releasing 30 years after the previous entry, with a new star taking over the titular role and an aging director at the helm. It seemed like a sad cash-grab. Then we watched it. It was brighter, faster, louder, and weirder than Mad Max had ever been.
Every character in it, from Charlize Theron’s Furiosa and the villain Immortan Joe to the Doof Warrior and Max himself, stood out as an individual and each is memorable in their own right. The movie did pretty well at the Oscars that year for a movie about the apocalypse and was one of the best-reviewed movies of 2015.
Now, the black-and-white version, Mad Max: Fury Road – Black and Chrome Edition – is set to hit a limited run of theaters in just a few days before it releases on DVD and Blu-ray in May.
