Gaming is tricky for those using the keyboard of a MacBook. That blasted Function “fn” gets in the way of that all-important “control” key used to crouch in first person shooters or to group units in games like Starcraft II. Fortunately, there’s good news for you MacBook gamers, and best of all, it’s free!
Double Command: Remapping FN to Control
There’s a free application called DoubleCommand that will remap the “fn” key as an extra “control” key. I found this app after losing several games due to the inability to group units effectively while playing Starcraft II on my MacBook Pro.
Once you’ve downloaded and installed DoubleCommand, you can access it via “System Preferences” or “Spotlight”.
You should see the menu above after clicking on the application. All you have to do is check “Function Key acts as Control Key”. That’s it. No manually key remapping, no coding, you don’t even need to restart, it works instantly.
The only downside to remapping your “fn” key to “control” would be that you’d lose the “function” ability. However, it’s not a big deal especially if you never even use the darn thing.
Hopefully this little guide would help you frustrated MacBook gamers. Happy gaming!
