Our list of expectations for this today's WWDC keynote continues to grow, and it's becoming worryingly long. At this rate, it's going to take Tim Cook a good four or five hours to announce everything we're anticipating, and so it seems inevitable that some of us are going to be disappointed that the product we were waiting for didn't come.
But two products on my "probably" pile include the Mac Pro and the MacBook Pro. Both machines are due an update, especially the Mac Pro, which has gone nearly two years without any attention. According to a report from 9to5Mac, there will be three configurations for the high-end desktop, including two "standard" models, and a server model.
"Reliable source" report these machines will look like this:
- Normal configuration: 3.2GHz quad-core processor, 6GB of RAM, 1TB hard drive, and the ATI Radeon 5770 graphics chip.
- Normal configuration: 2.4GHz 12-core processor, 12GB of RAM, 1TB hard drive, and the ATI Radeon 5770 graphics chip.
- Server configuration: 3.2GHz quad-core processor, 8GB of RAM, Two 1TB hard drives
There will, of course, be some built-to-order options as well.
As for the MacBook Pro, 9to5Mac believes "Apple will be announcing both next-generation MacBook Pros with a thinner design and Retina Display AND spec-bumped MacBook Pros with the current design." The 15-inch model is expected to be the first to get a Retina display as well as that new design, while there will also be 13- and 15-inch models with the same design display, but new internals.
Those internals include:
- 13.3 inch: 2.5GHz dual core processor, 4GB of RAM, 500GB hard drive
- 13.3 inch: 2.9GHz dual core processor, 8GB of RAM, 750GB hard drive
- 15.4 inch: 2.3GHz quad core processor, 4GB of RAM, 500GB hard drive
- 15.4 inch: 2.6GHz quad core processor, 8GB of RAM, 750GB hard drive (BTO upgrades to 2.7GHz quad core and 1TB HD will be available)
There will also be new MacBook Airs, according to the report, which were only refreshed last October.
However, a number of scrupulous MacRumors readers are unconvinced by these claims, and have noted that the specifications for the Mac Pro are either outdates, or nonexistent:
As several readers have noted, not only is the inclusion of an old graphics card on the Mac Pro a strange detail, but the listed processors do not even exist at the appropriate price and performance points in the Sandy Bridge E Xeon E5 line of Intel processors Apple is expected to use. 9to5Mac's pre-launch spec sources have generally been very accurate in recent years, but they appear to be off this time on at least the Mac Pro models.
In addition to all of these new machines, the report claims Apple will also release updated AirPort Express stations and USB SuperDrives, which will allow the latter to work with the new MacBook Pro — and not just the MacBook Air. There is also expected to be a new MagSafe adapter, and a new Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter.
There's certainly a lot to look forward to, then. And this is on top of the OS X Mountain Lion and iOS 6 announcements, which always happens at Apple's WWDC events.
