Disney has been very careful about what it shows regarding Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with our most revealing look coming in last week’s trailer. And while we’ve seen many of the franchise’s new and old characters, we have yet to see Luke Skywalker, whose fate all these years later is still unknown.

We actually did see a leaked image of Luke wearing his standard Jedi robes, but that was quickly taken down by Disney, suggesting it was a genuine look at the older, more scruffy Jedi. According to J.J. Abrams, Luke’s absence from all promotional material is by design, helping to keep the mystery surrounding the character’s current whereabouts.

“These are good questions to be asking,” Abrams said. “I can’t wait for you to find out the answer.”

That really doesn’t give us any clues as to where Luke is, and why. But at least Abrams acknowledges that Luke’s absence is very much on purpose, indicating this his role is going to be huge to the overall story.

In the most recent trailer, it was revealed that the newest characters—Rey and Finn—didn’t even know that the Force exists, which means the events that took place decades prior are now part of Star Wars lore. That will all be turned on its head, however, now that we know Kylo Ren is on a mission to eliminate the last remaining Jedi. For all we know, Luke might be the last one.

There has been a lot of speculation suggesting Luke might actually be evil at this point—Mark Hammil, who plays Luke Skywalker, actually pitched the idea years and years ago. But it’s unlikely he’s is now on the dark side, though we won’t know for sure what his role will be until Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits on Dec. 18, 2015.
