Link to the Past Comic

More cool news from the olden days of The Legend of Zelda. A speed runner has broken the world record for the original NES masterpiece, and now the Link to the Past comic from the pages of Nintendo Power is getting a sweet single-volume reprint collection.

Viz Media’s Perfect Square can be thanked for this little treasure. The comic, from famed manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori, remains one of the best examples of how exciting Nintendo Power’s comics could really be and how effective they were at selling subscriptions. In retrospect, it was one of those secret and subliminal instances when we were exposed to manga long before Americans had any idea that the word even existed!

We can point to this as one reason America churned out a generation of Japanophiles! Thanks a lot, Nintendo Power!

The Link to the Past comic somewhat follows the story of the video game it is based on but with far darker twists and turns than you might expect from the series. If you think warriors always get the happy ending after a victory, be sure to check this one out. The playful art and coloring don’t always match the drama you’ll find in here, and Link’s ambiguous feelings towards his success are pretty powerful.

The collection will be released in May, and Viz Media is also in the possession of other Legend of Zelda comic adaptations like Majora’s MaskOcarina of TimeThe Minish Cap and Phantom Hourglass. Hopefully, if this landmark title does well, it can get around to giving those a snazzy re-release as well. All of them are currently available on an individual basis.

And who knows, maybe the Valiant Comics will even get a chance to shine again too!

Don’t hate! These were excellent, too… in the mind of a five-year-old. I wouldn’t mind seeing if they still hold up. I still have my hardback buried somewhere in my parent’s basement.
