Earlier this year, LG rebooted the design language of its G line with the G6. The G6 marked the end of LG’s short-lived experimentation with modularity with a shift towards a premium finish. In many ways, the newly announced V30 is a follow up to the G6—not its namesake, the V20—with its new metal and glass build.
As you would expect, the V30 and G6 are very similar phones. But right away, you can see where LG learned from its mistakes with the G6. Gone are the flat sides and overall chunky frame. LG instead astutely added rounded off edges that sit flush with front and back glass panels that make the whole device feel more tightly built.
Even though the G6 featured a bezel-less display, it didn’t look quite as good as the Galaxy S8. The bezels were reduced but, not as impressively as the S8. Painting the bezels a color other than black also didn’t help. With its next phone, LG made sure that it matched the S8’s looks. The V30 arguably does that with gorgeous 6-inch FullVision OLED display.
Specs-wise, these phones aren’t too different. The big update comes with a Snapdragon 835 processor, which is the only noticeable improvement over the G6’s Snapdragon 821. Users will still be stuck with the same 4GB of RAM.
LG had to improve its phones to compete with the Samsungs and Essentials of the world. It’s first major effort, the G6, didn’t quite live up to that billing, but the V30 does and it’s a resounding success.
Check out the chart down below for a complete breakdown of the V30 and G6.
