LG will introduce multiple new Google TV-enabled television sets at CES 2013.
Google’s streaming media platform has been getting a bit more powerful as of late, and now LG thinks it may be time to give folks a few more options at trying it out. Announced this week, LG will be introducing 42, 47, 50, 55 and 60-inch sets with the platform built-in at CES 2013 next month in Las Vegas. Additionally, as many manufacturers do with Android, there will be a custom UI skin slapped on top of the platform which may be a bit more appealing to your casual consumer looking at the sets in an electronics store.
Particularly interesting will be the inclusion of “cards” in the system. This new feature will act as a folders for various apps as well as delivering information such as the news, weather or information about various television programs. With a dual-core processor on board, these should be served up fairly quickly, while also providing you with a snappy user experience.
A lot of folks had written off Google TV already, but this could potentially be where it soars.Google TV is a platform that has struggled a bit with adoption due to it originally being an add-on set top box, but with more manufacturers now baking it directly into their sets, it may have a better chance. More and more televisions are coming with apps built-in, but they are typically fairly limited in flexibility, and this could be where Google TV gains some traction as a replacement for all of the companies having to come up with their own platforms. It should also be enticing to developers as they could work on an app once and have it go out to multiple sets as opposed to one version for Company X’s platform, and another version for Company Y’s.
No word as of yet on the price or the availability, but we should learn all of those details when the sets are unveiled at CES 2013 in under two weeks time.
