It’s a CES smackdown! LG and Samsung both unveiled their visions for the future of laundry on Monday at CES, but which next-gen washing machine is the best?

It may sound silly, but both companies actually take the washing machine market very seriously. Last year, a few LG executives were apparently caught on camera sabotaging the hinges of a Samsung appliance at the IFA tradeshow in Berlin. Now, they’re kicking off the new year with a set of dueling appliances, each offering a different take on how to improve the laundry experience.

LG’s Twin Wash System manages to cram not just one but two separate washers into a single skinny machine. As a result you can separate your whites and colors and then clean them at the same time in separate compartments.  It has the potential to be a huge time saver, and the company’s home appliance chief Seong-jin Jo even went so far as to call it “disruptive.”

On top of that, the Twin Wash also promises to clean your clothes faster with a new two-nozzle setup and then dry them to perfection with its TurboSteam technology. But wait, there’s more. Built-in NFC means you can turn the machine on by simply touching your smartphone to a special “Tag On” symbol.

On to Samsung, which took a totally different approach with its new Activewash machine. Instead of offering an extra compartment, this model adds a fully-functional sink on top. As a result, you can take care of any stains in the sink and then dump your clothes from there straight into the machine using a built in hinge. It also includes the company’s SuperSpeed technology, which promises to run a regular load of laundry in just 36 minutes.

Deciding between these two models won’t be easy, but at the end of the day it may come down to your own personal lifestyle. If you have messy, stain-prone kids then Samung’s solution should save a ton of time, but if you generally do smaller loads of laundry LG’s model might be right for you.

Of course, the real question is how much each machine will cost. Samsung’s Activewash is set to launch sometime this Spring with no set price, while LG hasn’t announced any pricing or availability for the Twin Wash System. Hopefully we’ll get those details soon. Until then, I’m happy just sending my laundry out.
