Korean electronics giant LG has revealed the Fireweb, its first smartphone to use the budding Firefox OS.
Previously, Firefox OS could only be found on the ZTE Open, but Huawei and TCL are also working to develop their own smartphones that run the new mobile operating system. The Fireweb is part of a first wave of Firefox OS phones which is expected to sweep through Latin America, LG said, which means we should expect a few different models in the future.
It comes up way short on the specs side, carrying only a 4-inch screen with a 480 x 320 display, a 1GHz Qualcomm processor, and 4GB of expandable storage. It sets itself apart from the rest of the entry level Firefox OS phones thanks to a 5-megapixel camera, but we know that the specs need to stay on the low end in order to keep prices down, especially for phones targeted at emerging cell phone markets.
The phone launches today in Brazil through Telefonica Vivo for R$129 (roughly $59) for subscribers or R$449 ($207) for just picking one up. There is no telling if the Fireweb or the Firefox OS have a market in he United States yet, but we'll be sure to check and see if this Latin wave of smartphones gains any traction.
