Link and Zelda’s next chapter is already in the works, says series producer Eiji Aonuma. The producer shared the news in the newest Breath of the Wild artbook, Master Works, according to Game Informer.
Whatever else Aonuma knows, though, he’s keeping it to himself. We don’t know whether it’ll be open-world like Breath of the Wild, or go for something new entirely. Maybe Zelda will finally be a playable character. It could be a mobile game. Aonuma’s note simply states that the game is in the works.
It’s hardly news that a new Zelda game is in the works – Aonuma’s been producing the Zelda series for years, and it’s unlikely he’s going for years without anything to do. But it’s a bit more surprising that Nintendo allowed that tidbit to slip out. With that confirmation in the wild, Legend of Zelda superfans are more likely than before to start digging for information, hanging on Aonuma’s every word in the years to come before the game is officially unveiled.
But it may not be years. Game Informer notes that Nintendo’s creative director and Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto said at E3 this year that the company would like to start releasing Zelda games more rapidly. That could mean a whole new Zelda game in 2019, or it could simply refer to a shorter time between the different kinds of games Nintendo puts out under the Zelda header, from handheld games like The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds on 3DS, to core entries like Breath of the Wild.
Breath of the Wild was a revelation for the series, making what was previously a fairly linear dungeon crawl into an open world. It’s hard to imagine Nintendo taking the changes as far as it did with that game, but we’re still left eager to see what the company has in store.
