Leaked schematics for Apple's upcoming iPad Air 3 have all but confirmed the device will be a mini iPad Pro, with four speakers and a Smart Connector. The device also looks to be slightly thicker than its predecessor.

Thanks to a recent case leak, we already had a good idea what the iPad Air 3 might bring in terms of design changes. Now these things have been backed up by the leaked design schematics you see above, which was published by Engadget from an unnamed source.

As you can see in these drawings, the iPad Air 3 has two speakers along its top edge and two speakers along its bottom edge — just like the iPad Pro. It also adopts the iPad Pro's Smart Connector, which suggests Apple will also release a Smart Keyboard for this device.

The size of the iPad Air 3 is almost identical to the iPad Air 2, but it is a hair thicker at 6.15mm (versus 6.1mm), and slightly wider at 169.6mm (versus 169.5mm). These changes probably wouldn't be enough to ruin iPad Air 3's compatibility with iPad Air 2 cases, but the speakers and Smart Connector will.

In addition to these design changes, iPad Air 3 is expected to bring Apple Pencil support, and upgraded internals. A recent rumor even claimed it would pack a 4K display, but that seems unlikely given the larger iPad Pro is only reaching a 2K resolution.

Apple is expected to announce iPad Air 3 alongside its 4-inch "iPhone 5se" this spring.
