Kat Layton, the daughter of the world famous detective Professor Layton, will be taking over for her father in the series' upcoming Nintendo 3DS game, and developer Level-5 finally has a release date set in stone. During yesterday's Nintendo Direct in Japan, it was confirmed that the game will be getting a worldwide release on July 20.

The game will carry the title Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and The Millionaire's Conspiracy, and it is the seventh game in the main series. Just to be confusing, Level-5 also recently announced that the following game in the series will be titled Layton 7, even though it is the eighth game in the series. Why? Because it stars seven characters! That won't confuse anybody at all.

For now, we have this game, and we'll see where it takes us. We'll worry about confusing canon later.

16 million copies will keep the series alive

I enjoy the artwork, the stories, and the puzzles a lot, but sometimes I am genuinely baffled at how ridiculously popular this series became. It spawned an anime, spin-offs, tie-ins with other popular games, mobile apps, and plenty of merchandise all around Japan and the Western world. The main franchise also sold 16 million copies total, so while the series has been away for a few years, a number like that means some business executives weren't ready to give up on it.

In reality, Yo-kai Watch has been disappearing ever so slowly from Japanese retail shelves, so maybe that's why Level-5 is so eager to return to its former cash cow. Either way, I'm glad. This series is so much more unique and charming than Yok-kai Watch.

Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and The Millionaire's Conspiracy will be released worldwide for the Nintendo 3DS on July 20.
