As if New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D weren’t enough to satisfy the Nintendo eShop, the legendary gaming company has two more 2D platformers up its sleeve. Both Kirby: Triple Deluxe and Yoshi’s New Island are in the line-up and ready for release in 2014.
First up is Yoshi’s New Island, another sequel to the immensely popular Super Mario Land 2: Yoshi’s Island from the days of the Super Nintendo. Nintendo has assigned General Manager of EAD Software Development Department Takashi Tezuka to be the game’s lead designer. Why him? Because he was the director of the first game, and without him, Yoshi’s Island just doesn’t feel like the same paradise.
If you feel like you’ve seen that title before, its the same one Shigeru Miyamoto has. They’ve been doing console games together since the 1980s.
This time around, Yoshi can swallow enormous monsters and toss eggs many times his size. The colorful sprites have been cast aside for 3D models, but we’ll hold off on judgement for now. It will be released this spring.
And of course, Kirby is back and ready for action. Kirby: Triple Deluxe sees the pink puffball return to what he does best, swallowing enemies and stealing their powers. Sword, Blizzard, Back Drop, many of his classic powers are returning for his Nintendo 3DS debut, and this time he seems to have even picked up a pair of skies.
Kirby:Triple Deluxe will be released later in the year so as not to crowd the 2D platforming space.
Nintendo platformers essentially boil down to “run right and jump to win,” but it now has four games which play by the same rules on the same device and yet still feel so different. Could this prove the intimate knowledge the company has with what makes a game fun and unique? I doubt many other companies could do something like this correctly.
