Don’t worry Kingdom Hearts fans. Square Enix is working “full throttle” on Kingdom Hearts III, and co-director Tai Yasue confirms in an interview with GameInformer that everyone in the studio is excited for you to play it.
“We’ve been working full throttle. It’s moving along. We structured our team in a way that development of [Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix] doesn’t impede Kingdom Hearts III. I’m actually very excited about Kingdom Hearts III.”
Forward progress in the Kingdom Hearts series has been at a standstill for quite some time. Instead of pressing on with the canon, Square Enix has decided to dab in the cracks of the previous games with handheld releases for nearly a decade. Fans were finally treated to the reveal of Kingdom Hearts III at E3 last year after years of waiting along with the warning that it would be quite some time before we see it.
After all, Director Tetsuya Nomura is also knee deep in development on Final Fantasy XV as well.
In terms of gameplay, Yasue says that a lot will remain the same with previous games, but the technology has come so far to make it something new visually as well.
There’s a lot that’s the same, but there’s a lot that’s changed. We’re moving from a totally different console to [a new] console. The technology has evolved; it’s very new and everyone is doing a lot of research.
“And look-wise, it looks amazing as well. We’ve shown you some of the trailers and teasers. There are a lot of Disney-themed attractions, so that’s exciting as well. It’s very exciting for me and I want to tell you more about it, but I really can’t at this moment.”
Sadly though, Yasue expressed that he really enjoyed watching Frozen.
“There’s a lot of Disney content that’s new and coming out and we’re considering which ones to use, which would be good from a gameplay perspective,” Yasuie said.
“This is not an announcement or anything, but personally I enjoyed watching Frozen. It was magical: the stories, the songs, the ice expressions.”
Oh no! Is there no escape from this torment, Disney!? Couldn’t you maybe, possibly use something else? Like, Full Throttle maybe? Didn’t you nab that in the LucasArts deal?
Expect more on Kingdom Hearts III in the coming year. Yasue says that it didn’t show up at E3 this year because Square Enix wanted to focus more on Kingdom Hearts HD 2. ReMIX instead. It will be released on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
