Supreme Victory! Fighting game fans have long cried for a third Killer Instinct game, and a month after an ex-Rare developer derided Microsoft for never having any interest in the franchise, the ball seems to have gotten rolling for the long overdue return of this cherished series.

Microsoft decided to break the news themselves before overanxious gamers touring the public trademark sites could spoil the surprise. They announced on the PlayXBLA blog:

"With all due respect to our friends in the media who like to frequent trademark sites, we thought we'd break this one ourselves. Our legal eagles have authorized us to say: We have either renewed or refiled a trademark application in various jurisdictions."

Don't get your hopes up for Killer Instinct 3 just yet though as Microsoft hasn't specifically mentioned they are making a sequel. This could be just an HD facelift to the classic games, which would be better than nothing, or it might be just an attempt to protect their rights on the IP and sit on it for another fifteen years.

Not to mention the original developer, Rare, is a totally different beast than it was in the mid 90s. I hope they have the creative gusto to pull off an amazing sequel, or there are going to be a lot of disappointed fans out there.
