Did you see the 2012 movie Dredd? If not, you should go check it out. It’s one of the most underrated action and comic-book movies of the past decade. We learned earlier this year that it would be getting a television adaptation, and now it sounds like actor Karl Urban (Star Trek) may be stepping back into the role in some capacity.
The show, called Judge Dredd: Mega City One, was announced in May, and described by Entertainment Weekly as an “ensemble drama about a team of Judges – futuristic cops invested with the power to be judge, jury, and executioner – as they deal with the challenges the future-shocked 22nd century throws at them.”
At the time of the announcement, the producers had nothing to say regarding Karl Urban, who utterly owned the role in the 2012 movie. Now, though, we have an update from ComicBook.com with some (potentially) very good news.
“I would love to.”
“[Urban] revealed at the Star Trek Las Vegas Convention that he is in talks to appear in the television series Judge Dredd: Mega City One, which is currently in development,” ComicBook.com wrote.
“I am in discussions with them about that,” the actor said. “I told them that if they write the material and give Dredd something to do and give him a function, I will be there. I would love to.”
The biggest obstacle will be Urban’s schedule. Apart from appearing as Bones McCoy in the rebooted Star Trek trilogy, Urban is in high demand and has plenty of projects going on. Scheduling him into the show may be an impossibility. News of the show is exciting regardless, but his presence would be a welcome one that could help carry over fans of the film.
The Judge Dredd stories are set in a 22nd-century future where cities have grown to engulf entire coastlines, with the East Coast of the U.S. called Mega City One. It’s as dirty and crime-ridden as you’d expect. The TV series, which is in production with IM Global and game publisher Rebellion, is very early into development, so news will be slow for a while. This update has our hopes up.
