The DC Extended Universe is a mess. On Wednesday night, word went out that Ben Affleck would be stepping down from Batman, though that was quickly retracted as a mistake. One piece of info that stuck, though, is that the Joker is getting a standalone movie.
No, not the one being produced by Martin Scorsese and directed by The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips. No, this is a completely different Joker movie.
The directors behind the 2011 movie Crazy, Stupid, Love, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, are “in final negotiations to write and direct an untitled movie project centering on Batman villains Joker and Harley Quinn,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Jared Leto and Margot Robbie are due to reprise their roles as the villains, among the most popular characters in the DC pantheon, which they first portrayed in 2016’s Suicide Squad.”
Two Joker movies in two days
THR says the movie will show up after Suicide Squad 2, and that the movies are being pushed along “to contend with actors’ holding agreements.”
Speeding up movies for the sake of actor contracts sure sounds like someone is putting immediate profits ahead of long-term sustainability here. Audiences are used to accepting different actors playing the same role, but… at the same time? I’m not so sure. That other Joker movie is reportedly not connected to the DCEU at all, and will take place in the ’80s, while the one with Harley Quinn sticks to established series of DC movies. THR says it’ll be a “criminal love story,” which is about the only style that would work for a “Joker & Harley” movie.
The pace and content of these announcements sounds less like a movie studio and more like an actor pretending to be flying high on some illegal drugs. This is some weird and wild stuff. My bet is that one of these Joker flicks will get canned. Along with a few of the thousand other movies DC has planned.
