While elements from the upcoming Joker movie will feel familiar, the film is largely original. In fact, the movie doesn't follow any existing comic book storyline, according to Joker director Todd Phillips.
In an interview with Empire, Phillips talked about the inspirations behind Joker and his approach to the character.
We didn't follow anything from the comic books, which people are gonna be mad about. We just wrote our own version of where a guy like Joker might come from. That's what was interesting to me. We're not even doing Joker, but the story of becoming Joker. It's about this man.
Phillips has made it clear from the beginning that Joker would be more of a character study rather than a traditional comic film. His comments to Empire reiterate his approach while also acknowledging the fact that the movie might anger some fans.
Mainstream audiences know the Joker as Batman's most legendary antagonist. The upcoming Joker movie will instead chronicle how a failed standup comedian ultimately becomes the Clown Prince of Crime.
Based on what we've seen in the trailers, Joker looks like an interesting character study. We'll see how the movie turns out when it hits theaters on October 4, 2019.
