We all know that Bulbasaur is the coolest Pokémon ever, and that Pikachu has been the face of the franchise for the last twenty years. However, in a nationwide poll all across Japan, neither topped the list of the 100 most popular. My how the mighty have fallen.
Over 500,000 people voted in the poll, and in the end, Greninja topped the list as the king of popularity in the Pokémon universe with 15 percent of the vote. Oh, you kids. Those who attend the next Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire Pokémon movie this summer will be able to download him into their games for free!
That's why Pikachu lost, though, because who in their right mind wants to download a free Pikachu? You can catch one on a casual stroll through Viridian Forest. That's not special at all.
Well, played Japan. Well played.
As for Pikachu, he rolled up at number 4 and wasn't even the most popular among the original 151. Mew closed out above him in the number 3 spot. And Bulbasaur at least clocked in at the top 100 at number 89. A few others of note, Lucario dropped in at 15, and he was the king of the Pokémon world for a while. Snorlax ranks at 52, another favorite of mine, and all time greatest Pokémon, Charizard, cracked the top 10 at the number 9 spot.
Sadly, neither Poliwhirl nor Poliwrath ranked, not performing as well as I would have hoped. Oh well. You can check out the full list over at the official website.
Don't worry Pikachu. We all know you'll still be popular long after this generation forgets about Greninja. Just ask poor Lucario.
