Before Naughty Dog struck it big with Hollywood-esque productions like Uncharted and The Last of Us, the studio was once a proponent of video game mascots. PlayStation attempted to turn the tide on Mario and Sonic with Crash Bandicoot's three platforming classics and his cart racer, but the blooming console found better success in other third-party companies.
After that, well, Naughty Dog tried again! The PlayStation 2 era saw it follow a freakishly similar path of three platformers and a cart racer with its new franchise Jak and Daxter, and it is these four games which are all coming to the PlayStation 4 through Sony's remastered PS2 Classics initiative. 1080p, trophy support, the whole nine yards.
Sony announced the games through PlayStation Blog with a cheekily fun trailer.
We are delighted to announce that Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Jak II, and Jak 3 will be available on PS4 via download at PS Store later this year! Longtime fans and new players alike can experience the incredible exploits of Jak and Daxter as the duo sets out to explore ancient lands and unravel the mysteries of the Precursors.
Are these worth jumping through again?
I've never been that big into this series or this genre. The Rare collectathon method of 3D exploration has never been for me, and that's exactly what you're getting with the first game. I tried playing it several times in my younger years, but it just never clicked. I like the main characters, the setting, and the aesthetic, but I always found more love with Ratchet & Clank's action based approach back then.
However, compared to its two successors, my guess is that this first game aged better than the rest. Notice how it's the one that Sony used to advertise this announcement.
Naughty Dog first started branching into darker territory with the follow-up called Jak II, and yeah, I remember it being a somewhat lame product for angry teens, molded in the shadow of Grand Theft Auto's success. Jak was angry, the world was dark, murder everywhere. Hey, weren't these guys jumping on heads in the last game? Didn't they have cheeky, fun moments? What happened to those?
I never played the third game after this sequel turned me off so much, and I don't think I want to return to that mid-2000s angst, either. I never played Jak X: Combat Racing. I'll be skipping the sequels, but Jak and Daxter might be a fun game to go back to.
I might not be a fan, but you might be! Check these games out later this year on PlayStation 4.
