Amazon giveth, and Amazon taketh away… at least if you have a jailbroken iPad.
When the news hit earlier that the Amazon Instant Video iPad app debuted in the Apple App Store, the collective happy dance from Amazon Prime-wielding iPadders was almost palpable. But for a certain segment of the userbase, the cheers quickly turned to jeers when they realized that the app wouldn’t work on their jailbroken tablets.
The Verge recounted how one of its readers, who was running a modded version of the iOS 5.1.1 iPad firmware, attempted (and failed) to use the application. So he emailed Amazon, which replied that it knows all about the app malfunction on jailbroken tablets. It appears to be by design, since the presence of APT, Cydia or Installer — which is the big tip-off that the device is jailbroken — thwarts the service. The rep’s advice is to seek a solution from the jailbreak provider.
Meanwhile, across the webs, a piece of advice has surfaced suggesting xCon (a free Cydia app from the ModMyi repo) to bypass the errors. As I don’t have a jailbroken iPad, I can’t test (and therefore cannot recommend) this package, but if anyone has experience with this or another fix, tell us about it in the comments below.

I’m sorry that the Amazon Instant Video service isn’t yet working on your iPad.
The service is absolutely available to you. What we’re finding is that this specific error is popping up for folks whose iPads have any kind of jailbreak installed. A jailbreak is a program installed on your device that lets you do stuff not necessarily supported by the manufacturer. For example, if Apple blocks access to fictional service provider Orange you can add a thing that gets around that block.
If you do not believe their device to be jailbroken, please see if you have any of the following apps installed on your iPad:
“Installer” (“Installer App” is okay, but just “Installer” is another version of the first, “APT”.) The presence of any of these indicates a jailbreak, and our service won’t work. From the error message that you provided, it appears your device has been jail-broken. We are unable to provide any troubleshooting for your device.
You will need to contact the site or person where you received the jail-break for your device.
