Apple just released its iTunes Festival application for the iPhone and, contrary to reports earlier this week, it doesn't require iOS 7.1 to operate. Daring Fireball's John Gruber had originally said that he heard the release was imminent and that the application would require an official new update to iOS 7.1, suggesting that a public release was ready any day now. It appears he was only half right.

AppleInsider spotted the application and noticed that it runs on iOS 7, which leaves us wondering when iOS 7.1 will actually launch. It's unclear why iOS 7.1 would have been required anyway, since it's mostly expected to bring performance enhancements and some user interface tweaks, neither of which probably would have affected an iTunes Festival application.

The application will let you follow along with the live performances during the festival, which will run during SXSW in Austin Texas. It includes support for live streaming, on-demand video, photos of the events, an event line-up calendar and more. As for iOS 7.1? No word on that yet, but we'll let you know when we hear more.
