Bayonetta 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles X have soaked up so much of my attention as the Wii U's "mature" games that I completely forgot about Dead or Alive Creator Tomonobu Itagaki's violent return to the console scene, Devil's Third. It's understandable considering we saw a brief glimpse of this hack 'n slash/third-person shooter hybrid at E3 and not a whole lot else, but Itagaki is finally talking now that 2014 has come to an end.
In an interview with 4Gamer, translated by Siliconera, he mentions that the game is coming all together in its final months before release in 2015 and that he went all out in making it.
"It looks like Devil's Third for Wii U is just about done. It's been two years spent on designs, and four, six years of development. We've really kept all of you fans waiting, but for our first title since going independent, it wouldn't be fun if we released a small game, so [Devil's Third] is the result of making something while going all out."
While a huge portion of his game is the multiplayer affair, Itagaki also talks about how the game's single player is a romp 'n stomp action game inspired by older games.
"The single player is made to be like the action games of yesteryear. And the online competitive multiplayer mode was designed on a scale that will make you go 'this much already?!' The release date announcement will still take a little longer, but let's play together when it releases. It's loads of fun!!"
I'll say one thing about Devil's Third. It looks really rough but in that special kind of way where a talented Japanese studio like Platinum Games could pull it off. It's easy to see the game's inspirations and aspirations, but I have no idea if the blocky hallways, wild shooting, and hack 'n slash combat are going to provide the same level of experimentation and replayability that similar minded games provide. The multiplayer focus makes it sound more like Anarchy Reigns than anything else.
Remember that game changer?
Valhalla Games Studio is a brand new development team with no titles to its credit, and we only have Itagaki's own Xbox Ninja Gaiden games to really go off of here. Low and behold though, I enjoyed both of those, and maybe I'll enjoy Devil's Third all the same. Who knows?
Devil's Third will be released exclusively for the Wii U in 2015.
