Over the past few years, Samsung phones have boasted the industry’s best displays, and that tradition continued in 2017 with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8. But, according to DisplayMate, the recently released iPhone X has stolen that crown by featuring the best smartphone display on the market.

DisplayMate has a very thorough and technical breakdown of the iPhone X’s display, along with background information on the shift from LCD to OLED. But it basically comes down to this:

What makes the iPhone X the best smartphone display is the impressive Precision Display Calibration Apple developed, which transforms the OLED hardware into a superbly accurate, high performance, and gorgeous display, with close to Text Book Perfect Calibration and Performance!!

According to the report, the iPhone X’s display came out on top in a number of areas, including highest absolute color accuracy, highest full screen brightness for OLED smartphones, highest full screen contrast rating in ambient light, and highest contrast ratio.

While Samsung does manufacture the OLED panels used by Apple, it was Apple engineers who designed it. Clearly, the Cupertino company’s Precision Display Calibration process returned some impressive results.

In an earlier interview with Mashable, Apple’s top brass explained that it worked with Samsung to create bespoke technology and performed a lot of software magic to combat OLED’s drawbacks, such as burn-in and off-axis viewing.

Apple is rumored to go all-in on OLED technology next year, which is great news for Apple fans. Now, if only the company would implement some type of always-on display system, I’ll be happy.
